History of Mexican cuisine to be topic of talk and slide show
CHAPEL HILL -- Sharon Mujica, director of outreach for the Duke-University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Program in Latin American Studies and the UNC Institute of Latin American studies, will discuss "Chiles and Chocolate: A Visual History of Mexican Cuisine" at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at the East Regional Library in Knightdale.
No reservations are needed for the free public talk and slide show, to be held in the East Regional Library at 946 Steeple Square Court. For information, call 919-217-5300.
Mujica organizes activities including workshops for North Carolina educators and an annual Latin American film festival held at seven North Carolina colleges and universities. Through the UNC Summer School, she takes a group of students and faculty to Yucatán, Mexico, each summer.
As a field component of the course, Mújica instructs participants in Yucatec Maya, an indigenous Mexican language. Before coming to UNC in the early 1990s, Mujica lived and worked in Mexico for 20 years.
The lecture was arranged by Carolina Speakers at UNC. The outreach program brings more than 90 faculty members to business, civic and community groups across the state. The speakers share their expertise on more than 150 topics, including 46 that focus on North Carolina and the South.
