History professor to speak on the Arab-Israeli conflict
CHAPEL HILL -- Dr. Sarah Shields of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will speak on "The Arab-Israeli Conflict" in Mt. Airy on Sept. 20 and North Wilkesboro on Sept. 24.
Reservations are not required for the free public speeches.
In Mount Airy, Shields will speak at 7 p.m. in the Mount Airy Public Library at 145 Rockford St. For more information, call (336) 789-5108. In North Wilkesboro, she will speak at 6:30 p.m. in the Wilkes County Public Library at 215 Tenth Street. For more information, call (336) 838-2818.
An associate history professor, Shields teaches courses on the modern Middle East, women in the Middle East and Islamic civilization. She researches the creation of national identities in the Middle East between the world wars. She also serves on the women’s studies faculty, directs the first-year seminars program and is a fellow of the UNC Institute for the Arts and Humanities.
The lecture was arranged by Carolina Speakers at UNC. The outreach program brings more than 90 faculty members to business, civic and community groups across the state. The speakers share their expertise on more than 150 topics, including 46 that focus on North Carolina and the South.
