Public invited to view conversation with Brokaw; panel discussion to follow

CHAPEL HILL -- The Lucy Daniels Foundation and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s medical journalism program, in cooperation with NBC-17, will present "Living in an Anxious Age: How News Affects Our Psyche" Sept. 25.

The 8 p.m. event, a conversation between broadcaster Tom Brokaw and psychoanalyst Dr. Gail Saltz, will originate from the 92nd Street Y in New York City and be broadcast live to a local satellite downlink at UNC’s William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education. The center is three miles from campus off N.C. 54.

The free program will explore how continuous news coverage affects the emotional and psychological states of adults, teens and younger children. Brokaw, news anchor for "NBC Nightly News," will discuss the topic with Saltz, a frequent contributor to NBC’s "Today Show."

They will also explore the psychology of "the greatest generation," a term used by Brokaw to describe those who came to adulthood at the brink of World War II, and what that generation can teach about resilience and sacrifice.

A live question-and-answer session will follow the interview and feature a panel discussion with Dr. Harold Kudler, professor of psychiatry at Duke University; Dr. John Fairbank, co-director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Center on Childhood Trauma; and Mike Ward, president and general manager of NBC-17.

Joining them will be Dr. Carol Pardun, associate professor of journalism, and Dr. Tom Linden, Glaxo Wellcome distinguished professor of medical journalism, both from UNC’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Linden will moderate the panel discussion.
