Ronald K. Brown to bring powerful,
passionate works to Memorial Hall

CHAPEL HILL -- The choreographer for some of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's most important recent works, Ronald K. Brown, creates passionate works that erupt from the human condition.

Brown and his dance company, Evidence, will appear Saturday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of the 2005-2006 Carolina Performing Arts Series.

Inspired by the people of Africa and the African Diaspora, Brown blends African, modern, ballet and hip-hop dance styles. His powerful choreography offers finely crafted, exquisitely danced stories about truth, destiny and mankind’s need to liberate the spirit within.

“Evidence reflects all the information that has gone into us — the stories, the history,” Brown said. “I wanted it to be evidence of people's lives...the human experience.”

The program will include music by Oumou Sangare, Fela Kuti, Duke Ellington and Terry Riley.
“Brown's choreography has zoomed to the forefront of modern dance,” according to a reviewer for The Washington Post.

Single ticket prices range from $26 to $50 for the public and are $10 for Carolina students. Tickets are available by phone at (919) 843-3333 or from the Memorial Hall box office on Cameron Avenue, open Mondays-Fridays, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Carolina students should call the box office for purchasing information. Series subscriptions also are available.
