UNC-Chapel Hill reaches out to N.C. students of hurricane-ravaged universities
CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will enable undergraduate students who are residents of North Carolina and currently enrolled in a school closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina to enroll temporarily at the university, Chancellor James Moeser announced today (Sept. 1).
“We have received numerous requests from students and their parents who are trying to find a way to continue their educations under very difficult circumstances,” Moeser said. “We feel a special obligation to North Carolinians. Our great hope is that our sister institutions affected by the hurricane will be able to recover and reopen soon. But in the meantime, we will do everything we can to help their students.”
The students may take courses at UNC-Chapel Hill on a space-available basis, and the university will provide them with a transcript when they return to their home campuses.
University officials expect most students enrolling temporarily to take two or three classes this semester because classes will have been in session for almost two weeks by the time students enroll.
To take advantage of this offer, students must be residents of North Carolina and must contact the UNC-Chapel Hill Office of Undergraduate Admissions via their website at www.admissions.unc.edu or by calling 919-966-3621 no later than 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7.
Students will be responsible for their tuition and fees and, if applicable, room and board. The university will assist students with identifying housing.
