Experienced administrator Alice Poehls
chosen as new registrar for Carolina
CHAPEL HILL — Dr. Alice Poehls, most recently the registrar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been hired for the position of university registrar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Poehls will start work at UNC on Sept. 30. She will succeed David Lanier, who served as university registrar from 1985 until his retirement in July.
"Alice will be a terrific registrar at UNC. She’s enthusiastic about the work that she does and about our university. She’s experienced, she’s a hard worker and she knows the job," said Dr. Jerry Lucido, vice provost for enrollment management and director of admissions at UNC. "During her tenure at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she has done many of the things that we're looking for her to do here at Carolina."
Poehls was registrar and associate director of admissions and records at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1999 to 2003 and registrar and director of graduate admissions since 2003. At Illinois, she was involved in a 5-year implementation of SCT Banner, a unified digital campus database used by many schools.
Before moving to Illinois, she was university registrar at the University of North Dakota from 1993 to 1999, the school from which she also earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
Poehls will oversee the registration, assignment of class space, collection of grades, reporting of academic eligibility, administration of the graduation process and issuance of transcripts for more than 16,000 UNC undergraduates.
