CHAPEL HILL -- Paul Fulton Jr., president and chief executive officer of Bassett Furniture Industries, and Charles Shaffer Jr., attorney and partner in Atlanta's King & Spalding firm, will co-chair an upcoming campuswide fund-raising campaign at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Fulton and Shaffer will head a 15-member campaign cabinet that will plan and organize the seven-year campaign with an expected goal of $1 billion or more.

Cabinet members include Interim Chancellor William O. McCoy of Chapel Hill, Erskine Bowles of Charlotte, Tim Burnett of Greensboro, Mary Anne Dickson of Charlotte, John Ellison of Greensboro, Jim Hynes of Charlotte, Barbara Hyde of Memphis, Tenn., Knox Massey Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Bill Moore of Raleigh, Mike Overlock of New York, Roger Perry of Chapel Hill, Eddie Smith of Greenville and Donnell Thompson of Roswell, Ga.

The cabinet will work with the UNC-CH administration to establish campaign priorities and goals, select a campaign steering committee, determine the volunteer organization and conduct major early solicitations.

Fulton and Shaffer bring leadership and fund-raising skills to the campaign. Shaffer currently serves as chair of the university's National Development Council and both men served in key leadership roles during the university's Bicentennial Campaign. Fulton chaired Winston-Salem State University's Centennial Campaign and is former chairman of the Winston-Salem United Way.

Fulton, a 1957 UNC-CH graduate, served as president of Hanes Corp., president of Sara Lee Corp. and dean of UNC-CH's Kenan-Flagler Business School. He is president and chief executive officer of Bassett Furniture Industries. Fulton is a member of the Bank of America board of directors and has served on the board of Loews Companies Inc., the Independent College Fund of North Carolina advisory council and Brenner Children's Hospital advisory board.

Since retiring as business school dean in 1996, Fulton has remained active in the UNC-CH community, serving on the board of visitors for both the university and Kenan-Flagler Business School. He received the university's Distinguished Service Medal and William R. Davie Award for outstanding service to the university.

Shaffer graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UNC-CH in 1964 and graduated from the UNC-CH law school in 1967. He has been with King & Spalding for 31 years, specializing in commercial litigation, internal corporate investigations and special matters. Shaffer was president of the Atlanta Bar Association and is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was on the committee to bring the 1996 Olympics to Atlanta and had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch in a location of his choice. He chose the Old Well on the UNC-CH campus. He heads the Atlanta Sports Council, which has secured Super Bowl XXXIV for Atlanta in 2000.

At Carolina, Shaffer is former director of the General Alumni Association and a former member of the Board of Visitors, the Arts and Sciences Foundation board and the Law Foundation board. He received the university's Distinguished Service Medal and Davie Award. Shaffer's father was UNC-CH's first development director.
