Dean Smith to sign books Thursday (Feb. 21) at UNC
Retired UNC men’s basketball coach Dean Smith will sign copies of the new paperback version of his 1999 autobiography from 3 to 6 p.m. Feb. 21 at UNC’s Bull’s Head Bookstore.
Smith’s book, "A Coach’s Life: My Forty Years in College Basketball," is now available in paperback for $13.95 from Random House. At the Bull’s Head, Smith plans to sign only the new paperbacks -- not memorabilia or other items -- for his fans. He does not plan to give formal remarks or hold a question-and-answer session. For more information, call (919) 962-5060.
Co-writers of "A Coach’s Life" were John Kilgo, publisher of the sports magazine Carolina Blue, a radio announcer for men’s basketball at Davidson College and co-host for 14 years of Smith’s TV show; and Sally Jenkins, author of "Men Will Be Boys" and a sports reporter who has worked for publications including The Washington Post and Sports Illustrated.
Smith has the most wins ever in Division I college basketball, 879, and he coached the gold-medal U.S. Olympic team in 1976. In 36 years at Carolina, Smith won two national championships and helped integrate college basketball in the South by recruiting one of the first black basketball players in the region at a historically white university. High graduation rates among players were a hallmark of his programs.
