Taiwanese government donates more than 1,000 books to UNC library
The government of Taiwan has given UNC's library approximately 1,400 books on topics ranging from Taiwanese social sciences and humanities to natural sciences and statistics.
Most of the books are in Chinese and date back no further than 15 years, said Hsi-chu Bolick, East Asian bibliographer in UNC's Davis Library. She said the gift, worth about $35,000, will greatly enhance UNC's Taiwanese book collection in Davis. The UNC library system is the only area library system receiving such a gift. The gift counts toward the goal of the Carolina First campaign, a multi-year effort to position UNC as the nation's leading public university.
Representatives of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta will formally present the gift in an invitation-only reception Sept. 5 at UNC. The Atlanta office is one of 13 in the United States and represents the Republic of China on Taiwan.
