Rare Book Collection exhibit to follow Medieval, Renaissance handwriting

A free public exhibit in UNC's Wilson Library from Sept. 12 to Jan. 12 will explore the development of handwriting from the late Roman era through the 15th century, when script made the transition into type.

Hosted by the library's Rare Book Collection, "The Scribal Art: Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the Rare Book Collection" will feature manuscripts dating from the ninth century, including Gothic manuscripts of the high Middle Ages and manuscripts of the 15th-century Renaissance. Items will include Bibles and devotional works, classical literature and works of science, astrology, law, history and theology, all illustrating aspects of Medieval and Renaissance civilization.

An opening reception Sept. 12 will include exhibit viewing from 5-5:40 p.m. and a talk by Roberta Engleman, assistant curator of the Rare Book Collection, from 5:40-6:30 p.m.

The library opens from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 962-1143 or e-mail rbcref@email.unc.edu.
