WKIX radio alumni give funds for scholarships at UNC school
Disc jockeys and others who were with the radio station WKIX of Raleigh in the 1960s and '70s will donate scholarship funds to the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication on Sept. 20.
The Jerry Agar Show (3-6 p.m.) on NewsTalk 680 WPTF Radio will broadcast the gift presentation live at the top of its third hour, just after the 5 p.m. news. Former deejay Charlie Brown will give a check from the WKIX Alumni Association to Dr. Richard Cole, dean of the school. The amount has not yet been specified because fund-raising is still under way.
The association specified that the foundation will make awards to radio and television students over the next few years to help offset expenses of their studies. Association members contributed to the gift; more contributions were raised through efforts by Agar, Barbara Boney Caterers, Red's Beach Music Club and WPTF Radio of Raleigh, Ben & Jerry's and The Embers, the association said.
The alumni built WKIX into a top-rated broadcaster of contemporary pop music in the '60s and '70s. Information, alumni profiles and songs from the era are online at http://www.videoonline.com/reunion/.
The gift counts toward the UNC’s Carolina First fund-raising campaign, the goal of which will be formally announced Oct. 11. Gifts to the campaign support faculty, students, programs and building projects and help position Carolina as the nation’s leading public university.
