Historian to speak Monday about Booker T. Washington
Dr. Peter Coclanis, chair of the UNC history department, will give a free public lecture about Booker T. Washington at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Sept. 23) in Toy Lounge, on the top floor of Dey Hall.
The talk, "What Made Booker T. Washington?," will be the first this academic year in the Centering the South series, presented by UNC's Center for the Study of the American South.
Coclanis has written books including "The Shadow of a Dream: Economic Life and Death in the South Carolina Low Country, 1670-1920." A former president of the Agricultural History Society, he has won a Fulbright Fellowship and awards from the National Humanities Center, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Henry Luce Foundation and the Charles Warren Center at Harvard University.
