UNC professor helps plan Marshall Scholar send-off
Dr. Theodore Leinbaugh, a former Marshall Scholar at Oxford University and a professor of English at UNC, planned a panel discussion in Washington, D.C., last weekend (Sept. 21-22) to honor this year’s winners of the prestigious scholarship.
Participants in the Marshall Scholarship Colloquy included Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, Congressman John M. Spratt, former Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Daniel Yergin, and Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and a graduate of the UNC School of Medicine.
Leinbaugh, who also chairs the Marshall Scholarship Selection Committee based at the British Consulate-General’s Office in Atlanta, arranged a briefing for Marshall Scholars at the State Department last year after 9-11 with Armitage as part of the Marshall Colloquy for 2001. The conference was planned with the British Council and the British Embassy in Washington.
The Marshall Scholarships, financed by the British government, provide an opportunity for American students to continue their studies for two years at any British university. Long regarded as one of the highest undergraduate accolades, the Marshall Scholarships cover the scholar’s tuition, books, travel and living expenses.
