American culture and Israel topic of Oct. 14 lecture at UNC

An expert on American culture and perceptions of the Middle East will deliver a free public lecture at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 14) at UNC.

Dr. Melanie McAlister, associate professor of American Studies at George Washington University, wrote "Epic Encounters: Culture, Media and U.S. Interests in the Middle East, 1945-2000" (University of California Press, 2001). Her talk, "Left Behind: Americans Imagine Israel," will draw connections between U.S. relations with Israel and novels that depict the end of the world.

Sponsors of the talk, to be in the auditorium of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building on Pittsboro Street, are the James M. Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence, the Carolina Seminar for Comparative Islamic Studies and the University Center for International Studies.

For more information, contact Dr. Sarah Shields, associate professor of history, at 843-7773.
