DeFriese to receive prestigious Porter Prize in November

Dr. Gordon H. DeFriese, professor of social medicine, epidemiology, and health policy and administration at UNC, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Porter Prize from the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health, to be awarded in November.

Established in 1983, the Porter Prize was designed to heighten the awareness of health promotion and disease prevention to individuals in the community.

Past recipients include: Dr. Steven A. Schroeder, president and chief executive officer of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; Dr. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General; and Dr. Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood."

DeFriese earned the award for his outstanding work in health promotion and disease prevention. The award committee cited his work as former director of UNC’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, his service on the first U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and his research in prevention services, among other accomplishments.

In 1990, DeFriese helped form a new national organization called Partnership for Prevention, a coalition of private sector business and industry organizations, voluntary health organizations and state and federal public health agencies based in Washington, D.C., to work toward the promotion of prevention among the nation's health policy priorities.

Since 1994, DeFriese has served as president and chief executive officer of the N.C. Institute of Medicine, a private non-profit organization of lay and professional leaders chartered by the N.C. General Assembly to study the health needs and opportunities of the people of North Carolina.
