ADA Insights Web site helps people with disabilities find legal assistance

Researchers at UNC’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research have launched a Web site to provide information on how employment discrimination complaints should be filed under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Called ADA Insights and accessible at www.adainsights.org, this Web site provides easy navigation to people with disabilities, as well as vital information about the enforcement of the ADA’s Title I (ADA provisions designed to protect qualified individuals who face workplace discrimination due to a disability).

"It’s a Web site that’s really about the enforcement process and consequences of the process, what really happens when people with disabilities file a complaint," said Dr. Kathryn Moss, research fellow at the Sheps Center who has led the initiative.

"I’m excited about the site because it’s the most in-depth information available that exists on this subject. Also, it’s not just for those with disabilities, but all individuals who are working with or about people with disabilities."

The National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research and the National Institute of Mental Health funded the Web site, and non-profit organization NIYA created the design. Features include, but are not limited to, use of color combinations that do not pose problems for colorblind visitors and "alt tags," alternate text for people who cannot view images.

UNC surgeon to discuss training surgical work force in upcoming lecture

A UNC surgery professor will discuss training of the surgical work force during a free public lecture May 2.

Dr. George F. Sheldon, Zack D. Owens distinguished professor of surgery and chairman emeritus of the UNC School of Medicine’s department of surgery, will speak on "Training the Surgical Workforce: Yesterday’s Challenges, Tomorrow’s Opportunities."

The occasion for the talk is the 15th Annual Colin G. Thomas Jr. Lecture in Surgical Endocrinology, presented as part of the Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society Meeting. Time and location are 1 p.m. in the Clinic Auditorium on the Old Clinic Building’s fourth floor.

The lecture is named after the second chairman of UNC’s department of surgery, and the surgical society is named after the first chairman. The surgical society’s meeting is an opportunity for surgeons of all specialties who trained at UNC to present current research and clinical activities, fostering continuing multi-specialty education.

Seven UNC-trained surgeons will give presentations at the meeting’s scientific sessions, on subjects such as aortic aneurysms, surgery for morbid obesity and pancreatic cancer.
