University’s sundial undergoing renovations; work expected to be completed in June

Since 1956, the decorative sundial near the entrance of UNC’s Morehead Planetarium and Science Center has inspired campus visitors to pause a moment and consider the power of time – and in a bit of unwelcome irony, time has taken its toll on the beloved landmark.

Years of ice and wear and tear have created extensive damage to the sundial, and the university recently embarked on a project to restore its previous beauty, said Paul Kapp, UNC’s historic preservation officer.

The work is expected to be completed in June, he added.

An evaluation last summer of certain campus buildings and monuments brought attention to a "pretty good case of decay" on the sundial, Kapp said. The granite curbing was bulging from freezing water damage, and the finish was worn from excessive wear and tear.

The sundial, set amid a sprawling rose garden, is one of the largest of its type, with a diameter of 35 feet. Renovations to the original structure are expected to include N.C. granite cobblestones on the approach to the sundial and "skateblocks" blended into the edge of benches and planters, both in an effort to discourage skateboarding at the structure.

Kapp said the project has already drawn much interest, with passersby relieved to hear the landmark is not being removed, but rather restored.

"Members of the campus and greater community have been so supportive, and their concern has reinforced just how vital this landmark is in the life of this university. We look forward to finishing the project and giving a new-and-improved sundial back to the community for its enjoyment."
