Poet, essayist Chitwood
to teach creative writingPoet Michael Chitwood will teach a 12-week creative writing workshop from 7-9 p.m. Mondays starting Sept. 8 at UNC’s William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education.
Chitwood has written four collections of poetry and a book of essays. He teaches in UNC’s creative writing program. Chitwood will be available to answer questions about the workshop at an open house in the Friday Center from 4-5:30 p.m. Aug. 5. He also will autograph his books at the event in the center’s Higher Grounds Bookstore.
The workshop is intended for writers with works in progress and will cover poetry and prose. To register, call 962-2643 or visit http://fridaycenter.unc.edu/cni. The cost is $650 if registration is received by Aug. 22, or $675 if received after that date.

UNC Libraries showing films, cartoons outside this month
The public is invited to free showings of classic films and cartoons at 9 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday in July in front of Lenoir Hall at UNC. Davis Library and the media resources center of the House Undergraduate Library will show the movies, with one feature film and one cartoon at each of the free gatherings. On some nights, a short subject will be offered as well.
"This film series is intended to spotlight the library's strong holdings of classic film titles in excellent 16 millimeter prints," said Mitch Whichard, the library's film selector, who organized the series.
