Gallagher named one of most influential for his contributions to gifted education
 

Jim Gallagher, a senior scientist at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been listed in a new book as one of the 55 most influential people in gifted education.

The book is "Profiles of Influence in Gifted Education: Historical Perspectives and Future Directions" published by the National Association of Gifted Children.

Gallagher is a former director of the FPG Child Development Institute, a Kenan professor of education at UNC Chapel Hill, and a policy analyst/researcher for the National Center for Early Development & Learning at the FPG Child Development Institute,.  He is an internationally known expert on early childhood policy and on gifted children.

He was cited as "one who has made a difference" in the education and understanding of gifted children and has initiated, contributed to, and implemented "change in the field over time at national and/or international levels through original contributions."

Individuals were selected by Frances Karnes, director of the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi.

In addition to profiles of influential people, the book contains a history of legislation and critical events concerning gifted education, enhancements still needed in the field, and profiles of organizations and associations in the field of gifted education.

Heining-Boynton to serve as president of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages

Audrey L. Heining-Boynton, professor of education and Spanish, has been elected president of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). ACTFL is dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction and has an international membership of more than 7,000 foreign language educators and administrators.

Heining-Boynton will serve as president-elect during 2004. Her term as president will coincide with the National Year of Languages, a designation passed by Congress. She will serve as past-president in 2006.

Heining-Boynton also received the Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the ACTFL, recognizing her "innovative and effective efforts to improve foreign language teaching and learning." The award was presented at the annual convention of ACTFL in Philadelphia on Nov. 21, 2003.

Malloy selected as Distinguished
Alumna of West Chester University

Carol Malloy, associate professor of mathematics education, has been selected as a Distinguished Alumna of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. The West Chester Alumni Association made the selection, based on a nomination by two faculty members at West Chester.

The award recognizes Malloy's professional achievements, unusual service to the community, volunteer service and positive influence on others within her professional community. The award will be presented at Alumni Day at West Chester University on May 1, 2004.
