Confers Fellowship Status on UNC Kenan-Flagler's David Hofmann
David A. Hofmann, the Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Scholar and an associate professor of management at UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, has been elected a Fellow in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP).
He was one of eight SIOP members named to the society’s highest honor. Announcement of the award was made last month during the annual SIOP national conference in Chicago.
"SIOP Fellows have distinguished themselves by their outstanding contributions to the field," Michael Burke, president of the 6,000-member organization, said. "It is a significant honor granted only to a small percentage of industrial-organizational psychologists."
SIOP was established in 1982 and its members are dedicated to applying psychology to people in the workplace. Their field of psychology tries to understand and measure human behavior to improve employees’ satisfaction in their work, employers’ ability to select and promote the best people, and to generally make the workplace better for the men and women who work there.
Hofmann, who has been at UNC Kenan-Flagler since 2001, was honored for his stimulating research in organizational climate and particularly his focus on workplace safety.
Prior to joining the UNC faculty, he taught at Michigan State University, Texas A&M and Purdue. He is also in demand as a consultant to companies and organizations to assess organizational climate and leadership roles in safety issues, including nuclear power plant safety.
Hofmann, who earned his doctorate at Pennsylvania State University, has been an active researcher and he has published nearly 30 articles and book chapters, many of them in top-tier journals, including Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Applied Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Personnel Psychology and Journal of Management.
He is the co-editor of the book "Health and Safety in Organizations: A Multilevel Perspective." He has also been invited to present more than 60 papers and technical reports at various seminars, symposia and meetings.
Active in professional organizations, he is a member of the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Society and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. He has held several committee assignments in both the Academy of Management and SIOP.

Memory expert awarded international
fellowship for study in Germany
Dr. Ute J. Bayen, associate professor of psychology at UNC, has been awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship for a year of study in Germany, beginning in August. She will be based at the University of Mannheim, where she will conduct research on the impact of aging on eyewitness testimony.
Much has been written about the eyewitness memory of young adults and children, but very little is known about the eyewitness memory of older adults, said Bayen, who has published numerous journal articles on human memory.
Her latest project involves several experiments with young and older adults to investigate how memory for a witnessed event can be distorted by false information that is given after the event.
"As the percentage of older adults in the population of the United States and Germany is growing fast, research in the area of cognitive aging is very important in both countries," said Bayen.
Bayen has a Ph.D. in human development with an emphasis on aging from Pennsylvania State University, a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Freiburg and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Bonn. She has been a member of the UNC faculty since 1996 and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology and cognitive aging.
The fellowship is supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. Bayen’s earlier research on memory and aging has been funded by the National Institute on Aging and the Humboldt Foundation.
