UNC dramatic art professor named senior
associate dean for undergraduate education

Bobbi Owen, professor of dramatic art at UNC, has been named senior associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Arts and Sciences, effective Aug. 15.

She follows Dr. Karen Gil, who has been appointed chair of the department of psychology.

"Bobbi Owen is an accomplished theatrical designer, scholar and teacher with extensive administrative experience in service to undergraduate education, the college and the university," said Dr. Bernadette Gray-Little, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "I am confident that she will be an excellent dean for undergraduate education."

Owen has been a member of the university faculty since 1974. In her new position, she will oversee the college’s programs in undergraduate education.

She has been involved with the revision and implementation plans for the new undergraduate curriculum. Owen also has served as associate dean for arts and sciences, interim associate dean for general education, associate dean for academic services and assistant dean for the General College. She was a member of the administrative boards of the college and the General College for 10 years.

In the department of dramatic art, she has served as director of the honors program and of undergraduate studies and head of the graduate costume design program. She has taught undergraduate and graduate courses, honors classes and first-year seminars.

She is an expert theatrical designer, responsible for costume design for dozens of regional productions, including several every year for PlayMakers Repertory Co.

Daily Tar Heel wins awards
from N.C. Press Association

The Daily Tar Heel, the independent daily student newspaper serving UNC-Chapel Hill, won seven awards, including three for first place, in the North Carolina Press Association’s 2004 Best Advertising Contest Awards held earlier this month in Durham.

Out of more than 2,700 entries from 98 newspapers, The Daily Tar Heel competed against daily newspapers with a circulations ranging from 15,000-34,900.

Cindy Huntley, DTH production coordinator, won first place for best spot color in a restaurant/entertainment advertisement and for best use of spot color. She also won third place awards for best classified section.

Penny Persons, DTH advertising production manager, won first place for best spot color used in an institutional advertisement for an ad. Persons also won a second place award for best restaurant/entertainment ad. She took third place for best full color real estate ad and best use of full color.
