Chicano artist to discuss his work,
life, Friday (Sept. 24) in Durham
Chicano painter and illustrator Simón Silva will share his art and his experiences growing up in a family of migrant farm workers in a free public program Friday (Sept. 24) in Durham.
His presentation, "Celebrating Latino Culture: A Family Evening with Chicano Artist Simón Silva," will be from 7-8:30 p.m. at E.K. Powe Elementary School at 913 Ninth Street. The presentation will be primarily in Spanish, with some English commentary and full English translation provided.
Silva will seek to highlight the importance of art and literature in building self-respect and pride in one’s culture. His paintings depict stylized portraits of farm workers; he portrays them as people worthy of respect, who do their jobs with dignity and pride.
Silva’s appearance is sponsored by the Research Triangle Schools Partnership, a collaboration between the UNC School of Education and four neighboring school districts. The partnership is dedicated to school improvement and the enhancement of learning opportunities for all children.
