Anti-apartheid leader to speak
at School of Social Work
South African anti-apartheid leader and activist Eddie Daniels will speak about post-apartheid South Africa and its transformation to democracy at UNC’s School of Social Work Monday (Oct. 18).
The program will be held from 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room 300 of the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building, located at 301 Pittsboro St. The event is free to the public.
Daniels, author of the book "There and Back," spent 15 years in a South African prison due to his affiliation with the Liberal Party of South Africa and the African Resistance Movement that opposed apartheid. During most of his imprisonment on Robben Island, he shared a cellblock with Nelson Mandela, former leader of the African National Congress and former president of South Africa.
Daniels served as a guide for several groups of students from the School of Social Work this summer when they visited Robben Island during their annual trip to South Africa.
The program is sponsored by UNC’s Associate Provost for International Affairs-Office of the Provost, the School of Social Work, the College of Arts and Sciences’ department of African and Afro-American studies and the Duke University Southern Africa Faculty Concilium.

Hobgood is named associate dean for curriculum,
educational development in School of Medicine
Dr. Cherri D. Hobgood has been appointed associate dean for curriculum and educational development in UNC’s School of Medicine, effective Nov. 1.
She replaces Dr. Carol Tresolini, who was appointed as UNC’s associate provost for academic initiatives in early September.
In her new role, Hobgood will oversee the many functions of the educational development office, including providing expert consultation and assistance in curriculum and faculty development; seeking external funding and supporting faculty in obtaining external funding for educational development; enhancing an extensive program for evaluation of curriculum, courses and teaching; and building on the School of Medicine’s special programs for minority and disadvantaged students seeking health careers.
Hobgood also will oversee the School of Medicine’s efforts to maintain accreditation for its four-year medical degree program.
Previously, Hobgood served as an assistant professor and director of education in the School of Medicine’s department of emergency medicine. She is the recipient of numerous UNC and national teaching awards.
Hobgood was president of the N.C. College of Emergency Physicians in 2002-2003 and national president of the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association in 1997-1998. In 2004, the N.C. College of Emergency Physicians named her N.C. Emergency Physician of the Year.
