Three Picasso, Matisse prints
join UNC Ackland’s collection
A generous gift from an anonymous donor has added three twentieth-century prints to UNC’s Ackland Art Museum’s collection: Pablo Picasso’s "Boy Watching over a Sleeping Woman by Candlelight" and "The Grasshopper" and Henri Matisse’s "Nadia in Profile."
These prints use the techniques of etching and aquatint, processes in which acid eats away grooves (etching) or thousands of tiny pits (aquatint) in certain parts of the surface of a metal plate. When the plate is printed, the grooves or pits are filled with ink; the etched grooves print black lines and the aquatint produces tonal patches that can range from pale gray to deep black.
Although better known to the general public as painters, both Picasso and Matisse periodically turned away from painting to work in other media like sculpture, drawing or printmaking.
All three prints will be on view in the Ackland Art Museum through March 2005.
