Wilderness explorer to read from his
work Thursday (Feb. 10) at UNC
Author, poet, playwright, kayaker and wilderness explorer John Lane will read from his work Thursday (Feb. 10) at UNC.
The reading and discussion, which is free to the public, will be at 3:30 p.m. in Donovan Lounge on the second floor of Greenlaw Hall.
Lane is the author of "Chattooga: Descending into the Myth of Deliverance River," a personal and historic narrative of the wild and scenic river featured in the James Dickey book and Hollywood movie "Deliverance." Lane offers vivid details about the river, his own experiences exploring its twists and turns, and the real-life locals, activists and characters who are drawn to it.
A native of North Carolina, Lane has lived on a wilderness island off the coast of Georgia, studied crocodiles in Central America, surveyed monkeys in the rainforests of Suriname and traveled to many of the United States’ remote places.
He also is the author of "Waist Deep in Black Water" a collection of essays, and is co-editor of "The Woods Stretched for Miles: Contemporary Southern Nature Writing."
His outdoor writing has appeared in many periodicals including Outside, American White Water, Canoe and South Carolina Wildlife.
Lane teaches environmental literature, creative writing and film at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C.
His appearance at UNC is sponsored by the Creative Writing Program in the College of Arts and Sciences’ department of English.

UNC music department
to host events in February
UNC’s department of music will host the "Music of Dvorák and Berg" on Saturday (Feb. 12) and 20th-century masterworks for harpsichord and other instruments on Feb. 20.
As part of the William S. Newman Series, the music department will feature the Czech composer Antonín Dvorák’s "Serenade for Winds, Cello and Bass" and the Austrian composer Alban Berg’s "Chamber Concerto for Violin, Piano and 13 Winds" at 8 p.m. Saturday in Hill Hall auditorium.
UNC music professors Dr. Richard Luby (violin) and Dr. Thomas Warburton (piano) will perform, and Dr. Michael Votta Jr., associate professor, will conduct. Other UNC faculty and guests will be featured in the performance. Tickets are $15 for the public, $12 for seniors and $5 for students. The Newman Artists Series honors internationally known pianist, author, musicologist and late UNC Alumni distinguished professor emeritus Dr. William S. Newman.
Guest Artist Elaine Funaro, one of the leading performers of new music for
the harpsichord, will perform at 8 p.m. Feb. 20 in Hill Hall auditorium. The
ensemble features UNC faculty members Michael Schultz on the oboe, Dr. Brooks de
Wetter-Smith on the flute and Brent Wissick, associate professor, on the cello.
The performance is free to the public.
