Stone Center presents award-winning
film, ‘Moolaade,’ on Thursday (March 10)
"Moolaade," a film that addresses the difficult issue of female circumcision, will be shown at UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Student Union film auditorium at 7 p.m. Thursday (March 10).
The film presentation is free to the public, and a discussion will follow.
"Moolaade" has received numerous accolades, including a win at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and "best picture" recognition for indieWIRE’s 2004 Foreign Language Film Poll. The New York Times called it a powerful masterpiece of political filmmaking.
Ousmane Sembene, of Senegal, wrote and directed the film.
UNC’s Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History is presenting the film, and co-sponsors are UNC’s Organization of African Students’ Interests and Solidarity, the Curriculum in Women’s Studies, the Carolina Women’s Center and the Saint Augustine’s College theater and film program.

UNC School of Social Work launches
new education outreach program
UNC’s School of Social Work will begin accepting students this fall into its new advanced standing part-time master of social work (MSW) program in Winston-Salem.
The program will help professionals pursue an MSW while continuing to work. Students entering the program must already hold a bachelor’s degree in social work. By starting at this advanced level, the number of credit hours needed to complete the degree is decreased.
Few, if any, part-time MSW programs in the country are designed specifically for advanced standing students, said Dr. Jack Richman, dean of the school.
Classes will be offered on Fridays throughout the academic year at the Forsyth County Department of Social Services. Faculty members from UNC’s School of Social Work will teach the courses.
The program is accepting applications for the fall semester; the application deadline is March 15. Application information can be found online at http://ssw.unc.edu.
For more information about the program, contact Gregory Cooper at (919) 962-6432 or gcooper@email.unc.edu.
