Dec. 11, 2006 -- No. 596
Utilities work to close portion
of South Road to traffic Dec. 18
South Road will be closed to through traffic between Bell Tower Drive and South Columbia Street beginning Dec. 18, so that construction utility upgrades in that area can be completed.
Preliminary work will begin as early as Thursday (Dec. 14), but two-way traffic will be maintained in the area until Monday (Dec. 18).
Beginning Dec. 18, the affected area will be open to construction and emergency vehicles only. The road is expected to re-open to through traffic by Jan. 6, 2007. Detours to Chapel Hill Transit routes in that area of the campus and a map of the affected area are posted on the Department of Public Safety's "Breaking News" Web site: http://www.dps.unc.edu/dps/breakingnews/SouthRoadWeb/SouthRoad_12.06.htm.
Eastbound South Road will be inaccessible from McCauley and South Columbia Streets. Motorists and Bell Tower (BG) permit holders will need to access the Bell Tower Lot from the east. All other east-west vehicular traffic will be relegated to Cameron Avenue or Franklin Street to the north or Manning Drive to the south. East-west pedestrian access will be maintained along the sidewalk on the southern shoulder of South Road through the construction area.
Chapel Hill Transit will detour its "FCX," "G,", "HU," "S," "V," "Night TG," and "Saturday FG" routes in order to serve stops near the construction area. Information on all transit routes is available at: www.townofchapelhill.org/transit.
The Point-to-Point (P2P) Express route will not be affected by the closure. P2P does not run when residence halls are closed. With the completion of the exam period, P2P's last run of the semester will be 3 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 17). P2P Express service will resume in January after the road re-opens.
