To the editor:
An editorial in the May 11 edition of the
Chapel Hill Herald inaccurately reported that UNC-Chapel Hill intends to
present to its trustees a “revised plan” for Carolina North, the university’s
living-and-learning community planned for the Horace Williams tract in Chapel
Hill. We will not present a new or revised plan to the trustees. During the May
meeting, we will provide our trustees with an update on Carolina North and will
describe a study of potential sites for an alternate airport to serve the North
Carolina Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) program. In dozens of public
meetings, we have listened carefully to members of the community, and we will
continue to listen as we develop, in collaboration with local officials and
citizens’ groups, strategies for ensuring that Carolina North serves the needs
of the university, the community and the state.
Sincerely,
Tony Waldrop
Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic
Development
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
