Anti-Psychotics Approved to Treat Suicidal Behavior
The New York Times
Clozapine, one of a new generation of anti-psychotic drugs, has become the
first psychiatric medication to win federal approval as a treatment for suicidal
behavior. ... Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, a professor of psychiatry and
pharmacology at the University of North Carolina, said the study that led
to the F.D.A.'s approval made clear "that clozapine has the ability to alleviate
the symptoms which impel patients to suicidal behaviors." ...

The Chronicle of Higher Education
The 21 American universities that are seeking to raise at least $1-billion
collected a total of more than $200-million in gifts and pledges during the
last month for which they had data available ... The University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, $882.6-million as of November 30 (increase of
$9.02-million in the last month); the goal is $1.8-billion by 2007. ...

NFL big men at higher risk of cardiovascular diseases

Tim Bowens would be considered overweight in any other line of work. But
in the NFL, the Dolphins' 6-foot-4, 320-pound defensive tackle is considered

North Carolina News Note
Fulton Crews, director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies and
professor of pharmacology and psychiatry, will be a featured guest on
WUNC-FM's "The People's Pharmacy" on Saturday, December 21.
The program will address the impact of alcohol and prescription drugs
on driving and will air at 7:00 a.m and rebroadcasted on Saturday,
December 28 at 4:00 p.m.
