Expert to talk on cultural ties

A US professor will visit Bahrain next week on a lecture tour that aims to promote cultural understanding between Islam and the West. University of North Carolina Kenan Distinguished professor of Islamic studies Carl Ernst will arrive on Thursday for the six-day visit organized by Discover Islam.

walking alone in the dark to her dorm at Montclair State University...Raju Rishi, co-founder of Rave, said Montclair State was the first to use the safety feature, called Rave Guardian. A half-dozen other schools, including nearby Fairleigh Dickinson University and the University of North Carolina, now use similar systems, Rishi said.

Asheville High School sophomore Ari Zitin said he thinks his efforts at educating students about the dangers of using
tobacco are working. ...Statewide tobacco use prevention and cessation initiatives have helped to curb cigarette use by North Carolina high school and middle school students, according to a study by UNC Chapel Hill, and all schools in North Carolina will go smoke-free next school year.

Push on immigration issue shows its value to NC GOP

A Republican candidate for governor pressed state officials Monday to defend a new policy requiring community colleges to
admit illegal immigrants, a sign that GOP hopefuls believe it a good issue for them in next year's election. ...The group has opposed other initiatives, including a 2005 bill that would have provided in-state tuition to illegal immigrants who attended University of North Carolina and community college campuses.
