Clarifying UNC's
work-study program (Letter to the Editor)
The Virginian Pilot
Re your Feb. 16 editorial, "U.Va.'s experiment will broaden access":
I write to clarify a reference to the Carolina Covenant, the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's initiative for low- income students.
UNC's qualified low-income students will graduate debt-free if they
work on campus 10 to 12 hours weekly in a work-study job instead of
borrowing. We will meet the rest of their needs through federal, state,
university and privately funded grants and scholarships.
Linking our promise to these students with work-study jobs is important
to Carolina. Research shows a positive correlation between students
who work part-time and their persistence, graduation and future success.
They receive invaluable hands-on experience in office, laboratory and
other professional settings.
Although our approaches differ, we are pleased U.Va. has taken this
important step.
Shirley Ort, Director of scholarships and student aid, University
of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill
