Carolina in the News
Here is a sampling of links and notes about Carolina
people and programs cited recently in the media:
National Coverage
One
for the money
Denver Post
You don't have to be a member of the New England Patriots or Carolina
Panthers
to become a part of Super Bowl XXXVIII on Sunday at Reliant Stadium.
You don't
have to hail from New England or the Carolinas, have a relative playing
on either
squad or profess an abiding passion for the teams....Koleman Strumpf,
a
University of North Carolina professor of economics, said he finds
it strange
that while it's common knowledge that there's a great deal of illegal
gambling done
in the country, hardly anyone, i.e. law enforcement officials, does
anything about it.
Muslims
view pool as unusable
Chicago Tribune
When the University of Chicago opened its state-of-the-art Gerald Ratner
Athletics
Center in the fall, university officials celebrated its dramatic curved
roof and soaring
masts as a modern interpretation of the university's predominant Gothic
architecture....
Washington and Lee University in Virginia and Brandeis University in
Massachusetts
also require graduates to be able to swim. The University of North
Carolina-Chapel
Hill will end its requirement in fall 2006.
State and Local Coverage
Paying
the price (Editorial)
The Charlotte Observer
No wonder students on the University of North Carolina's campuses are
raising a fuss
about proposals to raise tuition and fees....Not all chancellors took
the money. UNC
Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser declined his bonus. N.C. State
University
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox is pledging her nearly $25,000 bonus to State's
capital
campaign. Both are examples that students -- and lawmakers -- should
appreciate.
UNC identifies
virus that struck campus
The Herald-Sun
Health officials on Thursday identified the cause of the gastrointestinal
illness that has
sickened about 300 UNC students, but are still searching for the source
of the virus that
struck the Carolina campus.
Virus
linked to UNC illnesses
The News & Observer
Health officials said Thursday that norovirus may be responsible for
an outbreak of acute episodes of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea last week among at least 100
UNC-Chapel Hill students.

virus leaves some students ill

Robert Moffat didn't think anything was amiss when he received three
e-mails from fellow members of UNC's cross-country team the other day.
