Fighting fat (Commentary)
The Guardian (U.K.)

Two weeks after I wrote about the forbidden subject of how "fat America" was in
denial, comes news of one of the first corporate sponsored campaign initiatives
aimed specifically at tackling the subject of obesity. Gatorade, the sports drink, is
linking up with the University of North Carolina to run a long-term $4m campaign
called "Get kids in action", firmly targeted at encouraging America's couch potato
children to get out and exercise.

University anti-alcohol plan a failure?
MSNBC

One of the most popular campaigns to curb alcohol use on campus hasn’t reduced
student drinking and may actually have increased it, according to a new report from
the Harvard School of Public Health’s College Alcohol Study. ... The campaigns
have claimed success at some of the largest universities in the nation, such as the
University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina.

Whaley into swing of it
The Post Standard (Syracuse, N.Y.)

Suzy Whaley knows there's no chance to hide now. So she made sure she stood
out from the crowd Wednesday on the eve of her history-making venture on the
PGA Tour. ... Whaley's sports psychologist, Dr. Richard Coop from the University
of North Carolina
, blamed the error on Whaley not knowing in advance that the
pros in PGA Tour pro-ams have to putt out on every hole.

UNC booster club can't quite cover cost of scholarships
The News and Observer

For the first time in years, the University of North Carolina's athletics department

UNC may change stance on arena ads
The Herald-Sun

Long a taboo subject, the use of corporate advertising in UNC sports arenas is
receiving some consideration by university leaders as they grapple with continued
financial problems. The head of a committee of UNC's Board of Trustees
broached the controversial subject Wednesday during a report by Athletics
Director Dick Baddour

UNC planners discuss chiller plant
The News and Observer

Planners at UNC-Chapel Hill told trustees Wednesday that a much-debated
chiller plant and parking deck proposal were not included on a development plan

year span.

N.C. legislators have no business attempting to intimidate universities
over reading programs (Editorial)
Asheville Citizen-Times

Once again, in a move that demonstrates an appalling disrespect for the concept
of the free exchange of ideas, Republican members of the North Carolina General
Assembly have attempted to intimidate the University of North Carolina over a
book chosen for a summer reading program.

Students flooded with pro-capitalist teaching (Letter to the Editor)
The Herald-Sun

As an incoming freshman to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I was
assigned to read “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America,” by
Barbara Ehrenreich. I am appalled by the audacity of Michael McKnight, a UNC
senior and leader of an opposition group, and the few state senators who joined
this bandwagon.

An introduction to life (Letter to the Editor)
News and Observer

I would like to thank state Sen. Hugh Webster for stating some of the most
important reasons that UNC-Chapel Hill freshmen should participate in this year's
reading program. Webster's reported criticism suggests that the university and its
culture often forget about the struggles of mundane reality.

Issues and Trends Affecting Carolina

A ‘Disaster’ at Berkeley
Newsweek

For many high-school seniors, the University of California, Berkeley, is the holy
grail, a chance to study with the best minds from around the world. But as
prospective students and their parents toured the campus last week, the school
had to work hard to put on a good face for them. ... The budget crunch has put
extra pressure on nearly everyone at this storied campus.
