New initiative will involve UNC, other schools

A Duke University researcher will lead a major new push to develop a
vaccine against AIDS. ...By building on new methods of locating patients
in the very early stages of HIV infection -- methods developed by UNC
researchers Christopher Pilcher, Myron Cohen and Joseph Eron -- the
CHAVIS team will devise clinical trials focusing on those patients,

More people fall ill with the tick-borne disease Rocky Mountain spotted
fever in North Carolina than in any other state. ...Dr. David Weber,
a professor at the UNC School of Public Health, said that besides children,
another group is particularly susceptible to catching tick-borne diseases:
golfers.

Next time you're at the pharmacy, glaring at the workers and wondering
why it's taking so long to fill your prescription, cut the pharmacist
a break. ...The number of pharmacists in the state working in retail
stores actually increased about 20 percent between 1991 and 2003, according
to data compiled by researchers at the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health
Services Research at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Scott Johnson was in the right place at the right time for some heavy
lifting on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus Thursday. Johnson, owner of John's
Towing, had just finished pulling a concrete-mixing truck from an 8-foot
hole by the Frank Porter Graham Student Union on South Road about 5
p.m.
