'Fidelity gene' found in voles
BBC News, UK

By altering the small animal's brain hormone chemistry, scientists have made a promiscuous meadow vole faithful - just like its prairie vole cousin. ...Professor Joseph Piven, a psychiatry expert from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US, agrees the voles might reveal something interesting about autism.

Good Results in Clinical Trial of Growth Drug

Research that the biotechnology giant Genentech began more than a decade ago could be on the verge of a major payoff - but not necessarily for Genentech....The data on IGF-1 for growth is based on a study conducted by Louis Underwood, a medical doctor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and Steven Chernausek, a professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.

Concussions worthy of second look

It was one of those sounds crowds love to hear: when the running back and the linebacker collide, helmet to helmet, power against power....According to Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz, director of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory at the University of North Carolina and lead author of NATA's position statement on sport-related concussions, as many as 75 percent of concussions go unreported in high school and college football.

Dean Smith breaks record with 877th win
ESPN

He never really wanted the record, never really cared about the record. But when you're Dean Smith and you teach the game of basketball as well as he does, and when you coach the game as well as he does, and when you have as much character, class, and integrity as he does, and when the players who play for you respect you as much as they do, victories have a way of piling up.
Note: ESPN is counting down the 100 most memorable moments in sports of the past 25 years. Dean Smith was 84th.

UNC changes to campus plan get go-ahead

UNC has gotten the town's OK to expand the Morehead Planetarium, shift a planned parking deck and make several other changes to the university's campus development plan.

Family support gets nod
The News & Observer

Financing for a program that would help the families of National Guard and Reserve soldiers was approved in a bill that passed a key House committee Wednesday...The proposed National Program for Citizen-Soldier Support would be run by UNC-Chapel Hill and would include a consortium of institutions and other universities.
Note: The National Program for Citizen-Soldier Support was mentioned on WUNC news this morning. The announcement was made from US Rep. David Price's office.

Freund of UNC-Chapel Hill's nursing school finds that trouble is indeed ahead unless the state can find a way to train more nurses, and make the profession of teaching nurses -- and nursing itself -- more attractive.

A decision in good standing (Point of View)

On the surface, the U.S. Supreme Court's Newdow (Pledge of Allegiance) decision appears to be a studied effort to avoid a serious constitutional question on a technicality. It is not. Although past cases can be found where technical doctrines were used to avoid a question that should have been decided, Newdow was not one of those cases....Arnold H. Loewy is the Graham Kenan professor of law at the UNC School of Law.

Advice isn't her line

The good news: Sarah Dessen's book "This Lullaby" has been optioned by New Line Cinema, the same movie studio that distributed last year's "How to Deal" with Mandy Moore....Dessen's fans have phoned her at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she's a lecturer, and are sometimes seen hovering in the hallway outside her office door.

UNC projects supported but not done deal

The N.C. House voted to agree with the Senate on approving at least two major new state university projects Wednesday and leaders in both chambers agree that a third -- a UNC Charlotte research center -- is a good idea.

Universities could see more money
The News & Observer

The state House decided Wednesday to use money from health and tobacco trust funds to pay for five university construction projects, including a new cancer center at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Community college tuition may rise
Greensboro News & Record

For the state's community college students, the legislative news from Raleigh does not look so hot....In 2003, professors in the University of North Carolina system were paid an average of nearly $64,000, which ranked fifth in the Southeast, according to a report from the Southern Regional Education Board.
