Carolina in the News
Here is a sampling of links and notes about Carolina
people and programs cited recently in the media:
International Coverage
'Fidelity
gene' found in voles
BBC News, UK
By altering the small animal's brain hormone chemistry, scientists have
made a promiscuous meadow vole faithful - just like its prairie vole
cousin. ...Professor Joseph Piven, a psychiatry expert from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US, agrees the voles might reveal
something interesting about autism.
National Coverage
Good
Results in Clinical Trial of Growth Drug
The New York Times
Research that the biotechnology giant Genentech began more than a decade
ago could be on the verge of a major payoff - but not necessarily for
Genentech....The data on IGF-1 for growth is based on a study conducted
by Louis Underwood, a medical doctor at the University of North Carolina
in Chapel Hill, and Steven Chernausek, a professor of pediatrics
at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati.

Concussions
worthy of second look
The Baltimore Sun
It was one of those sounds crowds love to hear: when the running back
and the linebacker collide, helmet to helmet, power against power....According
to Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz, director of the Sports Medicine Research
Laboratory at the University of North Carolina and lead author of
NATA's position statement on sport-related concussions, as many as 75
percent of concussions go unreported in high school and college football.

Dean
Smith breaks record with 877th win
ESPN
He never really wanted the record, never really cared about the record.
But when you're Dean Smith and you teach the game of basketball as well
as he does, and when you coach the game as well as he does, and when
you have as much character, class, and integrity as he does, and when
the players who play for you respect you as much as they do, victories
have a way of piling up.
Note: ESPN is counting down the 100 most memorable moments in sports
of the past 25 years. Dean Smith was 84th.

and Reserve soldiers was approved in a bill that passed a key House
committee Wednesday...The proposed National Program for Citizen-Soldier
Support would be run by UNC-Chapel Hill and would include a consortium
of institutions and other universities.
Note: The National Program for Citizen-Soldier Support was mentioned
on WUNC news this morning. The announcement was made from US Rep. David
Price's office.
Economics
likely pushes AHEC to RDU (Editorial)
The Chapel Hill Herald
Funny thing about UNC's Area Health Education Centers: As beneficial
the program surely is for the state's citizens, no one around here seems
willing to sacrifice for it.
Citizens
miss 28.5% of job gain
The News & Observer
When the clothing factory where he worked in Mexico closed late last
year, Augustin Rosas came to North Carolina....But James Smith, a finance
professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, said immigrant labor probably accounted
for much of North Carolina's job growth.
...condition:
critical (Editorial)
The News & Observer
If there is a crisis in the nursing profession, then there is a potential
crisis for every man, woman and child who may one day need medical care.
A task force headed by the respected Dean Emerita Cynthia M. Freund
of UNC-Chapel Hill's nursing school finds that trouble is indeed
ahead unless the state can find a way to train more nurses, and make
the profession of teaching nurses -- and nursing itself -- more attractive.
Lyme Disease
On Rise In N.C.
WRAL-TV (CBS, Raleigh)
It is hard to believe something as tiny as a tick can make you so sick.
A Fuquay-Varina woman learned that after a camping trip last summer...."We're
clearly seeing more cases," said University of North Carolina
epidemiologist Dr. David Weber.
A
decision in good standing (Point of View)
The News & Observer
On the surface, the U.S. Supreme Court's Newdow (Pledge of Allegiance)
decision appears to be a studied effort to avoid a serious constitutional
question on a technicality. It is not. Although past cases can be found
where technical doctrines were used to avoid a question that should
have been decided, Newdow was not one of those cases....Arnold H.
Loewy is the Graham Kenan professor of law at the UNC School of Law.
Advice
isn't her line
The News & Observer
The good news: Sarah Dessen's book "This Lullaby" has
been optioned by New Line Cinema, the same movie studio that distributed
last year's "How to Deal" with Mandy Moore....Dessen's fans
have phoned her at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she's a lecturer, and
are sometimes seen hovering in the hallway outside her office door.
Issues & Trends
UNC
projects supported but not done deal
The Charlotte Observer
The N.C. House voted to agree with the Senate on approving at least
two major new state university projects Wednesday and leaders in both
chambers agree that a third -- a UNC Charlotte research center -- is
a good idea.
Universities
could see more money
The News & Observer
The state House decided Wednesday to use money from health and tobacco
trust funds to pay for five university construction projects, including
a new cancer center at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Community
college tuition may rise
Greensboro News & Record
For the state's community college students, the legislative news from
Raleigh does not look so hot....In 2003, professors in the University

ranked fifth in the Southeast, according to a report from the Southern
