News
Here is a sampling
of links and notes about Carolina
people and programs cited recently in the media:
National Coverage
Gene
May Affect Blood-Clot Drug's Effects
Health Day News Service
Testing for variations of a gene that helps control blood clotting could
one day help doctors write better prescriptions for warfarin, a clot-preventing
drug that is taken by millions of Americans and is difficult to manage,
researchers report....The gene, designated VKORC1, was described only
last year by a group led by Dr. Darrel W. Stafford at the University
of North Carolina.
State & Local
Coverage
Moeser
to join NCAA task force
The News & Observer (Raleigh)
UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor James Moeser has been selected by the NCAA
as a member of the new task force that will explore the future of college
sports.
UNC
merchandise sales booming
The News & Observer (Raleigh)
Early this past March, sales of North Carolina's athletic licensing
products were slumping, down about 20 percent from a similar period
in 2004....Since the Tar Heels clipped the nets in St. Louis in April,
fans have clamored for hats, T-shirts and multiple other champ-labeled
items. Merchants have reveled in the business boom. So has the university,
which has gotten more money to pump into its general scholarship fund
and into the athletics department's budget.
Get
ready to say goodbye to the airport (Editorial)
The Chapel Hill Herald
Horace Williams Airport has been on shaky ground for some time....For
a long time, the university fought that move. But then it jumped on
the bandwagon, for a completely different reason. UNC wanted the airport
off the Horace Williams Tract so it could begin construction of its
massive Carolina North satellite campus.
Up
in the Air
The Daily Tar Heel
University officials first moved to close the Horace Williams Airport
three years ago....The airport, which has been under the University's
control for more than half a century, conflicts with the first phase
of Carolina North's development.

Just
say no to developing parking lot (Editorial)
The Chapel Hill News
Over the years I have been pegged as a member of the "go-go growth"
crowd by Dan Coleman, local columnist and political attack dog for certain
members of our community....Let's help make Chapel Hill a Shining City
on the Hill for the Arts by using Lot 5 to create much-needed transportation
infrastructure (i.e., parking) for UNC's $165 million Performance Arts
Common.
'Remember
the war'
The Chapel Hill News
"Remember the Alamo." "Remember the Maine." "Remember
September 11th."...In each case, the call to remember the dead
only led to more dead, UNC historian Sarah Shields said Monday.
