Gene May Affect Blood-Clot Drug's Effects

Testing for variations of a gene that helps control blood clotting could one day help doctors write better prescriptions for warfarin, a clot-preventing drug that is taken by millions of Americans and is difficult to manage, researchers report....The gene, designated VKORC1, was described only last year by a group led by Dr. Darrel W. Stafford at the University of North Carolina.

Early this past March, sales of North Carolina's athletic licensing products were slumping, down about 20 percent from a similar period in 2004....Since the Tar Heels clipped the nets in St. Louis in April, fans have clamored for hats, T-shirts and multiple other champ-labeled items. Merchants have reveled in the business boom. So has the university, which has gotten more money to pump into its general scholarship fund and into the athletics department's budget.

Horace Williams Airport has been on shaky ground for some time....For a long time, the university fought that move. But then it jumped on the bandwagon, for a completely different reason. UNC wanted the airport off the Horace Williams Tract so it could begin construction of its massive Carolina North satellite campus.

University officials first moved to close the Horace Williams Airport three years ago....The airport, which has been under the University's control for more than half a century, conflicts with the first phase of Carolina North's development.

Over the years I have been pegged as a member of the "go-go growth" crowd by Dan Coleman, local columnist and political attack dog for certain members of our community....Let's help make Chapel Hill a Shining City on the Hill for the Arts by using Lot 5 to create much-needed transportation infrastructure (i.e., parking) for UNC's $165 million Performance Arts Common.
