Carolina in the News

Here is a sampling of links and notes about Carolina
people and programs cited recently in the media:

National Coverage

U.S.C., L.S.U. Meet at White House
The New York Times

Southern California and LSU finally met Tuesday, but not on the football field. President Bush hosted the players at the White House to honor the co-national champions....Both teams are national champions, Bush declared to cheers at a ceremony featuring three other NCAA championship teams: Indiana's men's soccer team, North Carolina's women's soccer team and USC women's volleyball team.

President Welcomes NCAA Fall National Champs to White House
Whitehouse.gov (press release)

...we honor Coach Anson Dorrance's UNC Tar Heel women's soccer team. (Applause.) Anson's got a pretty good record. He's coached for 25 years, and he's won 18 national championships. That's the sign of a good coach who knows good talent and knows how to mold everybody into a good team. This year they were 32-0. When I had my honor of having my picture taken with the team, I asked, what was the closest match, closest game. One of the ladies said, it was 3-0. That's a heck of a team; 32-0 and the closest game is 3-0. UNC gets a lot of attention for its basketball team, but let me remind you of what the legendary coach Dean Smith said. He said, "UNC is a women's soccer school." And once again, these ladies have proven Coach Dean Smith correct. Welcome back.

Hispanics and the Bottom Rung
Business Week

You may be excused if you assumed African Americans and Hispanics are in the same economic boat....Economic research supports that statement. For example, Cubans, who are often lighter in color, receive more positive treatment in the workplace, which translates into a 2.2% gain in earnings, according to a preliminary study led by William Darity, director of the Institute of African-American Research at the University of North Carolina and Jason Dietrich of the U.S. Treasury Dept. Yet, Mexicans and Dominicans get less favorable treatment, and Hispanics overall earn 8% to 9% less than whites do for the same work.
