Fructose
sweetener linked to rise in American obesity
National Associated Press
Researchers say they've found more evidence of a link between a rapid
rise in obesity and a corn product used to sweeten soft drinks and food
since the 1970s....Barry Popkin, a professor of nutrition at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who worked on the study,
said he believes a third to half of the increase in calorie intake since
the 1970s comes from soft drinks and fruit drinks.

Hill Settles Part of Lawsuit Accusing Women's Soccer Coach of Sexual
Harassment

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will pay a former
women's soccer player $70,000 and have its women's soccer coach participate
in sensitivity-training programs for eight years in order to settle
part of a $12-million sexual-harassment lawsuit that was filed in 1998,
university officials announced this week.

UNC to
apply parking break
The Chapel Hill Herald
Carolina's lowest-paid employees will get a bit of a break under a new
parking fee structure likely to win approval from the UNC trustees today....While
most employees earning less than $25,000 a year would seem unlikely
to pay for the more expensive permits, some do for work purposes, said
Carolyn Elfland, associate vice chancellor for campus services.

fund set up for UNC School of Social Work

Miriam McFadden of Nashville, Tenn., has established a $1.2 million
trust fund that will be used to recruit and retain faculty for the School
of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Oyster
catches meager
The News & Observer
Charlie Antwine on Wednesday plunged his oyster tongs to the bottom
of the Newport River, scissored the 10-foot handles with a snap and
and hoisted up a clattering basket of shells....Charles "Pete"
Peterson, a researcher with the University of North Carolina's Institute
of Marine Sciences in Morehead City, is growing sterile Asian oysters
to see how they fare in Tar Heel waters.

To Better Account For How Tuition Money Spent

The University of North Carolina system said it will aggressively track
tuition spending next year...."Increase offerings for students,"
said Jeffrey Davies, UNC's vice president for finance. "Reduce
class sizes. Hire less part-time faculty."
