Here is a sampling of links and notes about Carolina
people and programs cited recently in the media:
National Coverage
Doctors
Look for Source of Stent Complications
The New York Times
When a new therapy performs extraordinarily well in clinical tests and
is widely publicized and licensed, excitement mounts. But after hundreds
of thousands of patients receive the new treatment, unexpected problems
can turn up to temper the enthusiasm....The issue is broader than the
Cypher stent because medicine has now reached "a point where the
application of new technologies and medical therapies is coming at such
a pace that we are looking at systems and how effectively we take care
of patients and administer therapies," Dr. [Sidney] Smith
said. He directs the center for cardiovascular science and medicine
at the University of North Carolina.
State and Local Coverage
Experts
say auto park's job potential huge
The Greenville (S.C.) News
The early projection that Clemson University's automotive research park
in Greenville could generate as many as 20,000 jobs remains an optimistic
guess, but experts say the development's potential is enormous....University
of North Carolina business professor Michael Luger said in
a 1991 study that half of all announced research parks failed. Of those
that survived, half ended up changing their focus.
UNC gets
approval for 'research facility'
The Herald-Sun
UNC can put another "research facility" on a site adjacent
to University Lake, but what exactly the new building will house remains
a mystery.
Issues and Trends
Visa
Hassles (Editorial)
The Washington Post
AS IT HAPPENS, this is "International Education Week." In
a statement marking this occasion, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell
lauded foreign exchange programs. They promote "the free exchange
of ideas," he said, and help find "joint solutions to problems."
That may be -- but at the moment, the State Department's reputation
abroad is one of an institution that prevents students and other visitors
from coming to this country.
'What
Does a Scientist Have to Do With Terrorism?'
The Washington Post
Jennifer Rodriquez Vazquez had hoped to be polishing up her English
in San Francisco by now, a critical step toward earning a PhD in biology.
UNC
Admissions Cap (Editorial)
Winston-Salem Journal
The University of North Carolina Board of Governors acted wisely in
postponing for a year any decision on raising the cap on out-of-state
admissions. The board can use that year to better explain its reasons
for wanting the increase and to improve the proposal itself.
Access
to proposed Carolina North top concern at council meeting
The Herald-Sun
The possible points of discussion between Chapel Hill and UNC officials
about the Carolina North campus may seem countless at this stage, but
on Monday, the Town Council signaled what a few of those points may
be.
