The Chronicle of Higher Education
The 22 American universities that are seeking to raise at least $1-billion
collected a total of $757-million in gifts and pledges during the last
month for which they had data available....The University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, $1.321-billion as of September 30 (increase
of $17.3-million in the last month); the goal is $1.8-billion by 2007.

Film festival
to focus on everyday life

This year's Latin American Film Festival continues through Nov. 14 on
14 campuses in the Triangle, Triad and Charlotte area. The Consortium
on Latin American Studies at UNC and Duke University are presenting
the festival, "Cine sin Fronteras: Mirando Hacia el Sur/Cinema
Without Borders: Looking to the South." It is free and open to
the public.

from high school....Now he is a Harvard undergraduate studying economics,
an opportunity that he credits to the UNC student-run organization,

At UNC, students got the vote out. Though specific turnout data isn't
available, election officials and other campus observers say UNC students
hit the polls heavily this Election Day, perhaps spurred by the ongoing
war in Iraq or a host of other issues germane to college-age Americans.

The cover of "High Life High Volume" (Yep Roc Records), the
new album by the Forty-Fives, features a woman in a short skirt straight
out of "That '70s Show," holding a vintage eight-track tape
deck....Yet that didn't stop WXYC, 89.3 FM, from breaking the cyberspace
barrier by becoming the first radio station on Earth to simulcast on
the Internet. The UNC-Chapel Hill station achieved the distinction
10 years ago this week and has marked the occasion by assembling "Bandwidth,"
a compilation of 23 great regional acts.

Commentary: Should Public Universities Behave Like Private Colleges?

Ever since Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1825,
it has been a leader among the nation's public universities. But in
recent years, Richmond's contribution to one of its best-known institutions
has been steadily shrinking. Today, the state provides just 8% of UVA's
$1.7 billion annual operating budget, down from 28% two decades ago.
