The 22 American universities that are seeking to raise at least $1-billion collected a total of $757-million in gifts and pledges during the last month for which they had data available....The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, $1.321-billion as of September 30 (increase of $17.3-million in the last month); the goal is $1.8-billion by 2007.

The Consortium on Latin American Studies at UNC and Duke University are presenting the festival, "Cine sin Fronteras: Mirando Hacia el Sur/Cinema Without Borders: Looking to the South." It is free and open to the public.

The cover of "High Life High Volume" (Yep Roc Records), the new album by the Forty-Fives, features a woman in a short skirt straight out of "That '70s Show," holding a vintage eight-track tape deck....Yet that didn't stop WXYC, 89.3 FM, from breaking the cyberspace barrier by becoming the first radio station on Earth to simulcast on the Internet. The UNC-Chapel Hill station achieved the distinction 10 years ago this week and has marked the occasion by assembling "Bandwidth," a compilation of 23 great regional acts.

Ever since Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia in 1825, it has been a leader among the nation's public universities. But in recent years, Richmond's contribution to one of its best-known institutions has been steadily shrinking. Today, the state provides just 8% of UVA's $1.7 billion annual operating budget, down from 28% two decades ago.
