The Chronicle of Higher Education
The 21 American universities that are seeking to raise at least $1-billion
collected a total of $303.5-million in gifts and pledges during the
last month
for which they had data available....The University of North Carolina
at
Chapel Hill, $1.071-billion as of August 31 (increase of $25.3-million
in
the last month); the goal is $1.8-billion by 2007.

Astronomy prof is new science advisor

Robert McMahan, a professor of physics and astronomy at UNC-Chapel
Hill, is the state's new science advisor. McMahan, 42, who was named
Tuesday by Commerce Secretary Jim Fain, will oversee a staff serving
the
N.C. Board of Science and Technology as well as advise the governor
and
secretary on recruiting science and technology companies in the state.
