UNC continued a 10-year pattern of growth in sponsored research funding
this year with a 10 percent increase in research dollars for the 2003
fiscal year.
Judge
warns bankrupt Midway Airlines may be liquidated
The News & Observer
A federal bankruptcy judge is threatening to liquidate Midway Airlines
because the carrier won't
be able to emerge from bankruptcy on Oct. 29....Small could give Midway
another extension at
the Sept. 24 hearing but Thursday's order increases pressure for the
company to emerge from
bankruptcy soon, said S. Elizabeth Gibson, a professor and bankruptcy
expert at the
law school of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

will speak to students at
ASU's convocation about her work, "Nickel and Dimed." That
is the same book that stoked
tempers this fall when it was the freshman reading assignment at the
University of North
Carolina at Chapel-Hill.

The events Alex Gilpin and Scott Lambeth planned for a recent Tuesday
were like many
people's weekday activities: household chores, exercise, lunch, work
and an evening social
engagement....The two men met through a social group organized by Division
TEACCH at
UNC's school of medicine. TEACCH stands for Treatment and Education
of Autistic and
related Communication handicapped CHildren, though the statewide program
also serves
adults.

cuts connection to phone calling card

UNC is discontinuing use of a widely distributed telephone calling
card after discovering that
it charges users nearly $6 for the first minute of each call.

card use 'misunderstanding' at UNC

Dean Smith said he felt like he was on the phone all day on April 8,
the day after the NCAA
men's basketball championship game, between calls in airports in New
Orleans and Atlanta
"I must have made 25 calls," the former UNC coach said.

State graduation rates improve
The News & Observer
The NCAA's 2003 graduation rates were released Tuesday, providing some
encouraging news
for N.C. State and some disappointing figures for the University
of North Carolina.
NCAA
graduation rates for athletes hit record high
The News & Observer
Division I college athletes are graduating at a record rate of 62 percent
and are 3 percent
more likely to graduate than non-athletes, according to an NCAA study
released Tuesday.
Bond
questions, town-gown relations key in campaign

Twelve candidates will be vying over the next couple of months for four
seats on the Town
Council, and for a chance to help shape policies affecting things like
the tax rate and town-
gown relations....Indeed, it already has figured in the campaign, with
several council candidates
speaking in public hearings on UNC's controversial proposal for parking

water plant.
