Carolina in the News
Here is a sampling of links and notes about Carolina
people and programs cited recently in the media:
National Coverage
Time
to sharpen study habits
The Cincinnati Post
Even though most schools start in August these days, Labor Day still
marks the switch from "summer" to "school" in my
mind....http://caps.unc.edu/TenTraps.html: It should indicate the often
stressful nature of the process of learning by the fact that this one
comes from the Counseling and Psychological Service Web site from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
State & Local Coverage
UNC library
employees get bigger paychecks
The Chapel Hill Herald/The Herald-Sun (Durham)
For the 137 employees of UNC's library system, today's paycheck will
bring some long-awaited relief...."It's great news and we're very
pleased," said Larry Alford, UNC's interim university librarian.
Lifting
up progressive voices
The News & Observer
Author and attorney Anthony Dunbar wants people to know the South is
not solid Bush country....Gene R. Nichol, dean of the school of law
and the Burton Craige Professor of Law at UNC-Chapel Hill, is one
of the contributors.
UNC
Public Health programs win $6.7M
Triangle Business Journal
Two University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public
Health programs have received $6.7 million in funding.
WHIRLWIND:
UNC's Olympics soccer stars do the TV shows
The Winston Salem-Journal
Life took a sudden and dramatic swing for soccer players Lindsay Tarpley
and Heather O'Reilly this week...The two went from an appearance on
Late Show with Dave Letterman to sitting in a classroom on the University
of North Carolina campus.
Under
a microscope
The News & Observer
John Bunting has faced the expectations of playing in a Super Bowl,
the pain of coming back from a grave knee injury and the stress of smashing
into bigger opponents day after day. "I've been involved in sports
all my life," said Bunting, the North Carolina head football coach.
"I enjoy the pressure." Except he has never faced pressure
quite like this.
A
cure for what ails Bunting, UNC
The News & Observer
John Bunting could use more than a borderline season to hang on to his
job. The embattled North Carolina football coach really needs a knockout:
six wins, a bowl bid, competitive performances throughout, a sweep against
in-state opponents and a revitalized fan base.
Issues & Trends
America's
best colleges? (Editorial)
The Charlotte Observer
North Carolina's excellent colleges and universities always rank high
on any chart, including the annual ratings by U.S. News & World
Report. But the U.S. News ratings are so arbitrary that no one should
take seriously the claim that a high ranking makes a school one of "America's
best." The ratings reliably gauge schools' wealth and the academic
preparation of their students. They don't tell how well a school's graduates
are educated or how a particular student would do there.
