Freshman Fact Sheet
Summary: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s fall
2000 freshman class represents the strongest academically of any freshman class
in university history, according to Office of Undergraduate Admissions
officials. In addition, overall cultural diversity has increased significantly
from the fall 1999 freshman class – by 6.7 percent.
Fall 2000 freshman class breakdown
- Number applied for admission: 17,571 (representing a 4.5 percent
increase over 1999)
- Number accepted: 6,089 (representing 34.7 percent of those applying
for admission and the strongest selectivity rate in university history)
- Number enrolled: 3,420
- Residence: 82 percent are North Carolinians; 18 percent are from
out of state
- Average SAT scores: 1,251 (representing a five-point increase over
1999 and 30-point increase over the past three years)
- Black students posted an SAT increase of 12 percent from 1999
- Number of black freshmen: 411 (representing a 4.6 percent increase
from 1999’s number of 393)
- Percentage of minority enrollment: Close to 21 percent (representing
a 6.7 percent increase from 1999)
- Percentage of freshmen who were high school valedictorians or salutatorians:
Nearly 10 percent
- Percentage of freshmen who ranked in the top 10 students in their high
schools: 36 percent
- Number of submitted Advanced Placement exam scores: 8,524 total
(representing a nearly 26 percent increase over 1999’s number)
- Black students posting at least one AP score increased by 53 percent
over 1999
- Number of National Merit Scholars: 137
- Number of National Achievement Scholars: 14
In addition, the UNC-CH Office of Undergraduate Admissions reports that the
number of admitted students receiving the Office’s highest rating for
coursework preparation increased 8.3 percent over 1999; the number of admitted
students receiving the second-highest rating increased by 3.2 percent.
