Howard E. Aldrich

Kenan professor of sociology, Aldrich received the Max Weber Award from the American Sociological Association on Organizations, Occupations and Work. The award is given for the best book published over the past three years. Aldrich won the award for Organizations Evolving.

Luis Diaz

Chair of the Department of Dermatology, Diaz has been elected president of the Society for Investigative Dermatology. The society, which was established in 1938 to foster research and education in cutaneous biology, has more than 2,000 members worldwide.

Carl W. Ernst and Kevin Jeffay

Ernst, chair of the Department of Religious Studies, and Jeffay, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, have received Graduation Fellowship awards from the North Carolina Networking Initiative (NCNI). The fellowships provides annual grants of $20,000 to faculty and students at Triangle-area universities whose research is designed to create applications that use next-generation networks.

William H. Glaze

Director of the Carolina Environmental Program, Glaze will be recognized this month as a "Newsmaker" by the American Chemical Society. He will be among five honorees recognized for "contributions toward communicating chemistry to the public via the news media."

Bob Goldstein

Assistant professor of biology, Goldstein is among 20 promising biomedical researchers selected as 2000 Pew Scholars in the Biomedical Sciences. Each scholar will receive $240,000 to help support his or her research over a four-year period. The awards are granted to young investigators who show outstanding promise in the basic and clinical sciences.

Martha Henderson

Geriatric nurse practitioner and clinical assistant professor in the School of Nursing, Henderson has been selected to participate in the Nursing Leadership Academy for End-of-Life Care. The academy, sponsored by the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing and funded by the Project on Death in America, seeks to provide nurses with training to improve end-of-life care.

Patsy Huff

Associate director of Student Services for Ancillary and Business Services, Huff has been honored as an American College Health Association fellow. Huff has been director of pharmacy with Student Health Services since 1986 and has faculty appointments with the schools of medicine and pharmacy.

Dennis A. Rondinelli

Glaxo Wellcome distinguished international professor of management at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and director of the Center for Global Business Research at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, Rondinelli gave the keynote address at the New York Academy of Sciences Conference on Moving People, Goods and Information in the 21st Century. Rondinelli's lecture was titled "Making Metropolitan Areas Competitive and Sustainable in the New Economy."

William L. Roper

Dean of the School of Public Health, Roper has been named to the Board of Directors of Luminex Corp. Based in Austin, Tx., Luminex develops, manufactures and markets biological testing technologies with applications across the life sciences industry.

George F. Sheldon

Zack D. Owens distinguished professor of surgery and department chair at the School of Medicine, Sheldon recently briefed members of Congress about the effect of the Balanced Budget Act on academic medical centers. Sheldon was one of the five presenters discussing teaching hospital financing. The briefing was sponsored by U.S. Sens. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.; Bill Frist, R-Tenn.; Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y.; and Arlen Specter, R-Penn.

Oliver Smithies

A member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Smithies has received the 15th International Okamoto Award from the Japan Vascular Disease Research Foundation for his contributions to medical research. The award is one of the most prestigious in Japan and consists of one million yen, roughly $10,000, along with a gold medallion and certificate.
