2001 University Campaign nets nearly $800,000

This year's University Campaign officially ended June 30. Apparently, Carolina's employees took the theme, "Time for Carolina," seriously -- and took the time to donate $125,000 more than last year.

Final figures are not in, but the preliminary figures show that 1,482 donors have pledged $785,434 in 2001, as opposed to the $659,224 that was pledged in 2000 by 1,547 employees. And Andi Sobbe, director of the Annual Fund, said this year's figures are still expected to rise.

Sobbe had nothing but praise for the level of giving this year. "In a year with so much budget uncertainty, it is doubly gratifying that employees have chosen this time to be so generous. It certainly attests to their love of Carolina," she said.

Last fall, as North Carolinians decided to vote overwhelmingly for the bonds referendum which will bring almost $500 million to the campus for building renovations and new construction, the critical needs of the campus were laid out clearly for all to see. Sobbe said there might be a connection between the success of both campaigns. "There has never been a time when the campus' needs have been so well-defined," she said, "and employees across-the-board have chosen to do their part to fund those needs."

Chancellor James Moeser made his pledge early. As he said in the campaign brochure, "I've given to Carolina to make myself part of the University in a deeper way. Carolina is a very special place at a special time in its history ... Our gifts help make this a better University."

Some gifts have been earmarked for the University to spend as needed, or for specific departments and units. In the past, pledges have been made specifically to University libraries, for professorships for faculty members, to the Botanical Garden and to the Ackland Museum of Art. The medical complexes, including Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and UNC Hospitals, have also been designated to receive gifts.

"Rest assured," Sobbe said, "gifts are allocated exactly as the donor specifies."

All donors' names will appear in a Gazette honor roll in the fall.
