Construction Watch

Editor's note: The following is the debut installment of "Construction Watch," a new Gazette feature designed to let employees know about major campus construction projects on the horizon and their impact on employees' working lives. For a comprehensive look at campus construction, see the Facilities Services Capital Improvements Program web site at http://www.fac.unc.edu/CIP/

Overview

Project name: Murphey Hall.

Project location: On Polk Place, facing Saunders Hall, adjacent to Bingham, Greenlaw and Manning.

Projected cost/funding source(s): $6.72 million/bond.

Scope/benefits of project: This project will provide for an extensive renovation of the entire building constructed in 1924. Murphey Hall is a heavily used general-purpose classroom building that also houses the classics department. Extensive work is required to preserve the building, improve occupants' safety, improve building security and enhance functional use. Work will include new room configurations, new ceilings and amp; lighting, new floors, new electrical and amp; telecommunication systems and central air conditioning.

Square footage: No new square footage.

Projected construction timeline: August 2001 - August 2002.

Swing space: The building will be closed during renovations. The classics department will move to Howell Hall for the duration of the project.

Impact on campus aesthetics

Trees: Much care is being taken to protect the trees that surround the building.

Green space: None.

Landscaping: The landscaped island on the south side of the building will be removed. The stone wall on the south side of the building will be reconfigured, and the area between it and the building will be re-landscaped.

Architecture: There will be some site utility work on the south side of the building, and the south entrance into the auditorium space will be reworked to provide ramp rather than stair access. The front entrance (north) will also be reworked to raise the exterior landing to the same level as the corridor inside the building so people don't have to walk up three steps after entering the building as they do now. The building will get new exterior doors and windows that will be complementary to its historical character.

Impact on parking, transit and pedestrian safety

Parking and transit: Six parking spaces in the Davis lot will be reserved for construction parking.

Pedestrian safety: The pedestrian route that runs from the front of Manning Hall, past the east end of Murphey and along the west side of Lenoir, between Lenoir and Greenlaw will be closed during construction. The path along the Polk Place side of Murphey will remain open. The path along the east side of Manning and Lenoir will also remain open but pedestrians will cross a construction vehicle access path at two points. Pedestrians will be directed by signage and barricades to those two crossing points.
