Creative writing scholarship funded with $2 million gift

Frank Hanes Sr., novelist, poet and retired journalist for the Winston-Salem Journal, has established a $2 million endowment that will fund a new Thomas Wolfe Scholarship in Creative Writing at Carolina, his alma mater. The four-year award covering tuition, fees, room, board and some extracurricular activities will go to one entering freshman annually, beginning in fall 2002.

The scholarship will encourage students to explore writing courses in various departments -- communication studies, dramatic art and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as well as in English.

Hanes was on the UNC Board of Visitors from 1974 to 1989 and has led and served on numerous other University committees and boards. He has won the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the William R. Davie Award, the highest honor given by Carolina trustees, acknowledging exceptional contributions to the University or society.
