Deb Bialeschki
Professor of leisure studies and recreational administration, Bialeschki and her student group, the Recreation Society, have received a Greenways and Open Space Award from the Town of Chapel Hill. In the past the group has sponsored "March for Parks" that resulted in donations of several thousand dollars to the city for park development.
David Carr
Associate professor in the School of Library and Information Science, Carr has been named Outstanding Teacher of the Year for 2000-01.
Carr was cited for his teaching, his encouragement of his students to take risks and for his dedication to his students.
F. John Case
Executive director of the Office of Contracts and Grants, Case was elected vice president/ president-elect of the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA). NCURA serves its members and advances the field of research administration through professional development, sharing of knowledge and by fostering a sense of community.
Michael Cole
Assistant professor of art, Cole has won a Rome Prize fellowship to study at the American Academy in Rome. He is among 28 artists and scholars
nationwide to receive the 2001-02 fellowships.
Frank S. French
Professor of pediatrics and director of the Laboratories of Reproductive Biology in the School of Medicine, French has won the American Society of Andrology 2001 Distinguished Andrologist Award.
The award notes his long and distinguished career as both a practicing pediatric endocrinologist and cutting edge researcher in male hormone action.
William H. Glaze
Director of the Carolina Environmental Program and professor of environmental sciences and engineering, Glaze is a recipient of the Advanced Oxidation Technologies Awards.
Glaze received the award in recognition of his pioneering work in the chemistry and photochemistry of hydrogen peroxide and ozone for destruction of organic contaminants in water.
Edward J. Kaiser
Professor of city and regional planning, Kaiser has been inducted into membership of the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners. Membership is based on individual achievement in urban and rural planning.
Jan J. Kohlmeyer
Professor of marine sciences, Kohlmeyer has received the distinguished mycologist of the year award from the Mycological Society of America.
Kohlmeyer has spent his career studying marine fungi and is considered the world expert on the subject.
Maura K. Lafferty, Patrick Paul O'Neill, Keith E.G. Simmons
Lafferty, in the Department of Classics, O'Neill, professor of English and American literature, and Simmons, professor of philosophy, have been appointed fellows of the National Humanities Center for the academic year 2001-02.
Steven Offenbacher
Professor in periodontology at the School of Dentistry, Offenbacher received a Special Impact Award by U.S. Rep. David Price at a Capitol Hill luncheon in May. The National Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition recognized him for his research linking oral health and pre-term babies.
Gary Pollack
Professor and chair of the School of Pharmacy's division of drug delivery and disposition, Pollack has received a grant for more than $900,000 from the National Institutes of Health.
The four-year grant will be used to fund research already in progress at the school on P-Glycoprotein (PGP) Induction. PGP is a protein that transports molecules across cell membranes.
Susan A. Randolph
Clinical instructor of occupational health nursing in the School of Public Health's Public Health Leadership Program, Randolph has been elected vice president of the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses.
The association promotes excellence in the occupational health nursing profession a wide range of services for the more than 12,500 members nationwide.
Bill Roper
Dean and professor of health policy and administration in the School of Public Health and professor of pediatrics in the School of Medicine, Roper has been appointed to the board of directors of DaVita Inc. DaVita is a leading provider of dialysis services for patients who have chronic kidney failure.
Joseph R. Shackelford
Recently retired from the Department of Family Medicine, Shackelford has been honored in Paris, Ill., by having a medical center named for him. Ceremonies in June announced the name of the facility as the James H. Acklin - Joseph R. Shackelford Clinic.
Shackelford received the honor for his years of professional leadership and medical practice in the community.
Rune Simeonsson
Professor in the School of Education and the psychology department, Simeonsson has received the 2001 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.
He was commended for his hard work, dedication, service and helping children worldwide.
Lisa R. Stimatz
Coordinator of Instructional Services in UNC Libraries, Stimatz has been named co-recipient of the Bernard M. Fry Award for the best article to appear in the Journal of Government Information during the year 2000. The winners each receive plaques and checks in the amount of $250.
James A. Swenberg
Professor in the department of environmental sciences and engineering and nutrition in the School of Public Health and of pathology and laboratory medicine in the School of Medicine, Swenberg has been awarded the Ohio State University Distinguished Alumnus Award.
The award recognizes alumni who have made distinguished contributions to society in the course of their careers and who bring recognition to their college or university as a whole.
Brent Wolfe, Chris Hosken, John Rosenthal, David Salvesen, Jessica Jones
Reporters at WUNC-FM (91.5 FM) have received awards in competitions sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists and the N.C. Associated Press.
Brent Wolfe won first place for sports reporting in the Green Eyeshade Awards with his piece on "March Madness."
Others recognized with Green Eyeshade Awards were reporter Chris Hosken, who won third place in the category of deadline reporting for a story on how area hospitals coped with record-breaking amounts of snow, and commentators John Rosenthal and David Salvesen who were recognized for criticism and editorial writing.
In the North Carolina Associated Press Awards, Jessica Jones was honored twice for her feature reporting, winning first place for a report on the Branchettes as well as an honorable mention. Brent Wolfe won an honorable mention for sports reporting.
Steven Zeisel
Professor and chair of the Department of Nutrition, Zeisel has won the Dannon Institute Award for Excellence in Medical-Dental Nutrition Education for 2001.
The award recognizes an outstanding career in medical-dental nutrition education.
