Derek K. Poarch, the new director of public safety at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will be formally sworn into office at a ceremony Friday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Carolina Inn's Chancellor's Ballroom.

Poarch is the former operations commander for the Lenoir, N.C., police department and a nationally recognized proponent of community-oriented policing. At UNC-CH, he heads a department with an $11 million budget and responsibility for law enforcement, transportation and parking. It includes 149 employees, 38 of whom are sworn police officers.
